'KINGER' CLOSES THE BOOK

My friend Michael King, who played for the Milwaukee Wave for 15 seasons, has just retired from indoor soccer (or football, depending on where you're from). I wish his family the best!

Here is the text of his retirement speech:

Thank you all for coming today.

I want to firstly thank God - in whom all things are possible.

I would also like to thank my wife, Niko, my children - Samantha, Gabriel and Sophia as well as my family in England for their love and support.

I am grateful to have had the opportunity to play for many storied franchises - the Cleveland Force, the Dallas Sidekicks, the Cleveland Crunch and the Baltimore Spirit, but more importantly I am honored to have played for the Milwaukee Wave for 15 seasons and to be retiring as a member of the Milwaukee Wave.

To the Krause family, I wish many more years of continued success. Your support of the Milwaukee Wave franchise, the players and staff has been the keystone that holds us together. I cannot express my gratitude enough.

To Coach Keith Tozer I give my thanks and appreciation, both as a player and as a friend. I was recovering from a possible career-ending ACL injury and you took a chance on me. I hope you feel that it was a chance that has paid off over the years.

To Team Athletic Trainer Larry Sayles, you have played many roles in my longevity and are the heart of the Milwaukee Wave. You also introduced me to the MACC fund, an organization that I whole-heartedly support and cannot praise enough for their timeless work and effort in battling childhood cancer.

To my team-mates both current and previous - thank you for the honor of having played along side you. I count many of you as friends and I count many of you as blessings. I wish you continued success in all your endeavors both on and off the field.

Through my 20+ years as a player I have had the support of many fans and many friends. God has blessed me by introducing me to all of you - thank you. I came to the United States from England as a young adult and you took me in. You became my friends and my family, when my family was so far away. This especially holds true for the members of the Milwaukee Wave Booster Club. It has been said that the only way to have a friend is to be one, I hope I have been a friend to all of you.

Why retire now? Well, when one of my Brazilian team-mates pointed out that his Father is two years younger than me, I thought now might just be the time.

During the season and especially at the end of the season I take stock. How does my body feel? What I am capable of giving as a player on and off the field? I have come to the realization that in the future I may only be able to fill two roles - that of coach or that of cheerleader. To be quite honest - I have never worn a suit while on the bench and I don't look good in a short skirt, despite whatever rumors you may have heard to the contrary. It simply is time.

I read a quote the other day from John Terry, (an English soccer player who plays for Chelsea and the English National Team - for those of you who do not know him). "After I finish playing, maybe I will sit down and watch it (the game) properly, but I don't think I will be able to until I retire or until I win it. " I have been honored to have been a part of the Milwaukee Wave winning 4 championships and now I am retiring. I am ready to watch the game properly.

Thank you.

'Bury Your Dead' Musician robbed after performing

Last night I was filming Time To Kill's performance for their upcoming music video at The Rave in Milwaukee, WI (why they changed the name of the venue from 'The Eagle's Club' to the incredibly lame 'The Rave' is another story).
There were probably a dozen or so bands performing that night, with HellYeah as the headliner. I remember that it was incredibly difficult to find parking, and I had to park several blocks away, as I was NOT going to pay $30 to park in the lot in front of the venue.
We got finished around 10. I wasn't going to just walk outside with all my gear. I mean, The Rave is not exactly in the nicest area to be walking around with bags of gear in the middle of the night. But, needless to say, I had taken precautions, or rather, I had brought precautions.
Of course, I got home ok. But then I hear about this guy:

A musician who had just played at the Rave was robbed early today, Milwaukee police said. A 23-year-old member of the band, Bury Your Dead, was sitting in a car at 12:30 a.m. when he was held up by five men, two with guns, police said. The band member, who was not identified, handed over a bag of jewelry, and the robbers fled from the lot, near N. 24th St. and W. Wisconsin Ave. The musician gave chase and caught up with the robbers but was kicked by them, suffering a cut to the head, police said. No one was arrested and police did not release a detailed description of the suspects.

There are other accounts that he was asleep in the car with that bag of jewelry. I dunno if thats true, but, either way, if you're on tour, and in a city you don't know well, what the fuck are you doing just chillin with a bag of jewelry in the car on a bad street (trust me, I wouldn't classify any street around there as 'safe'), with no security? And then on top of that, you run the guys down that stole your stuff, only to get the shit kicked out of you? Lucky he didn't get shot!
