Quinto Sol Bio

Last Week I put up Upground's bio and pictures, and videos and whatnot, so this week I'm dedicating some blogspace to Quinto Sol, starting with their Bio. Seeing as their website is still down, if you want to find out information about them, you can check here, or at their myspace page, which is http://www.myspace.com/quintosol

Music can be contagious, inspiring, and poignant. Quinto Sol (QS), or Fifth Sun, caries that type of emotion and sound - deeply rooted in community and roots music - from the Americas, to the Caribbean and Africa. Having emerged from the artist/activist community of East Los Angeles in 1994, Quinto Sol is roots-reggae at its core, woven seamlessly with Latin rhythms like cumbia, rumba, and son. A six piece band, Quinto Sol is a collective of musicians, inspired to use music as a tool for awareness of socio-political and economic issues facing their community; they do this by translating their own urban realities in every day life and the struggles of indigenous communities in the world, through conscious lyrics and powerful live performances. Nine years after the band's inception, Quinto Sol releases their second independent album and first national release, Barrio Roots. Produced by and arranged by the QS band, and engineered by Johnny Alvarez and Mizraim Leal, the band's lead vocalist and guitar player, Barrio Roots documents music from a period that helped shape what is known today as the East L.A. arts "scene"; a contemporary Chicano-inspired arts movement where, incidentally bands like Quetzal and Ozomatli emerged and grew to international popularity. "It starts here," says Javier Villalobos, the drummer and backbone of the band. "Home, East L.A. or L.A. ... planting that seed that let's everyone know where they come from and where they are headed - don't forget your roots and culture….we're just trying to give something back that's positive." From the roots-reggae song, "Mexica Tiahui", to the up-tempo cumbia/salsa jam, "Tocani" and the reggae/cumbia/salsa mix "Sangre", Quinto Sol takes you on a world beat tour unlike any reggae band around in the music circuit. Having performed with artists, such as: The Wailers, Third World, Inner Circle, Steel Pulse, Eek-A-Mouse, Maldita Vecindad, Jaguares, Malo, Ozomatli, Poncho Sanchez, Puya, Todos Tus Muertos and others, QS's fan base is as diverse as the musical fusion they produce and the bands with whom they've shared the stage; from L.A. to Mexico City and even Japan.

Band Members:

MIZRAIM LEAL (lead vocals, guitar ,producer, ingeneer), Javier Villalobos (drums), Martin Perez (bass), Cesar Villalobos (keyboards), Abel Gonzalez (sax), Armando Padilla (lead guitar). 2425tv episode #8- Los Skarnales!

Hey everybody, sorry it took so long to get this episode out! I know its been a long time since the last one... a lot of, shall we say, --interesting-- things have been happening here at the studio, to put it nicely.

;)

But yeah, here is some video that i have been really excited to put out on the web. This show was shot the same night Viernes 13 performed a few months ago at the Allen, but due to whatever background issues going on here at the studio, I am just now getting to posting it. Juan, the lead singer from Viernes 13, told me to go up to the stage and check them out. They were performing before V13, and i figured I would take him up on the offer to go up near the stage and fiddle with my camera, get light levels, ect.

Seeing as I had never heard of them before that night, lets just say that I was taken totally by surprise! These guys tore it up! They put on a really good, energetic show! To be honest, I never thought in my life that I would see a bunch of kids pack a club and start a frenetic mosh pit to a band that features an accordion as a main instrument! But somehow, it really fuckin works! So yeah, I am now a fan of Los Skarnales...

My apologies for the video quality; sometimes its hard to be in a dark club with a camera, and about 500 hyper 17 year olds jumping up and down, and a band that just cant stay still... ;)

For those of you who dont know who they are, here is their bio and a few links where you can get more info on them:

Los Skarnales Leading Houston's local music scene, Los Skarnales have kept their reputation by sticking to a unique blend of sound that is what some might describe as "Third Coast." This blend of music comes from the influence of Jamaican ska, rockabilly, and reggae. Los Skarnales are known mostly for an unmistakable energy as they perform across Texas, the U.S., and Mexico. Members are Felipe Galvan on vocals and percussion, Robert Rodriguez on accordion, Nick Gaitan on the upright bass, Ryan Scroggins playing the organ, Kenny Dickman on guitar, and Patrick Wheeler behind the drums. The band has won awards for consecutive years in Houston under many categories from best Rock en Espanol (2003, 2004, 2005) to Best Bassist (2004, 2005) and current album "Pachuco Boogie Sound System" has also been nomintated for the "album of the year" in Houston press. Pachuco Boogie has also been mentioned in Texas Music Magazine as one of the top 30 albums in Texas of 05. . The album, "Pachuco Boogie Sound System," (Megalith Records) has begun building a following throughout the U.S as well as Mexico, picking up new fans everywhere it is heard. It is alsohas been released in Spain October 05 under Megalith Records (Spain).

Houston's Own, Los Skarnales are a collective of Houston musicans playing in hybrids of styles ranging from ska, rockabilly, punk, soul, conjunto among many others.
