ON THE TOWN: With Kylee Swenson Gordon and Anthony Gordon Biking and chilling before gigs

Kylee Swenson Gordon and Anthony Gordon sing and play bass, respectively, in Loquat, the San Francisco indie-pop band that opened last year's Treasure Island Music Festival and is touring behind its latest album, "Secrets of the Sea." In anticipation of the group's monthlong residency at Cafe Du Nord, where it will be playing every Thursday throughout May, the husband-and-wife team let us in on a few of their favorite spots to hit between gigs.

CADIE: Cognitive Autoheuristic Distributed-Intelligence Entity

Ladies and Gentlemen, Skynet (or HAL, depending on your reference) may have just been unleashed.

Introducing CADIE

Research group switches on world's first "artificial intelligence" tasked-array system.

For several years now a small research group has been working on some challenging problems in the areas of neural networking, natural language and autonomous problem-solving. Last fall this group achieved a significant breakthrough: a powerful new technique for solving reinforcement learning problems, resulting in the first functional global-scale neuro-evolutionary learning cluster...

For more information about CADIE see this monograph, and follow CADIE's progress via her YouTube channel and blog.

The Citizen: Drama at Dube hearing

JOHANNESBURG - Judgment in the trial of Lucky Dube’s alleged killers was delayed yesterday after two of the accused were injured while trying to escape from custody.

Lawyers representing the two – Sifiso Mhlanga and Mbuti Mabe – told the Southern Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg the two men had been rushed to hospital after an attempted escape bid.

Johannesburg police spokesman John Maluleke said a truck transporting prisoners from the prison to the courts arrived at about 7.30am at the High Court building.

It drove into the country yard and down the basement where it parked next to the holding cell to off-load 16 prisoners.

The roller gate was then closed to seal off the basement and nine policemen were sent to carry out the prisoners’ transfer from the truck to the cells.

As per procedure, prisoners came out two-by-two to be handcuffed and to have their feet chained together.

“The first two pairs of prisoners came out of the truck and were cuffed and chained. The third pair included one of the men accused of murdering Dube,” said Captain Maluleke.

As the two men were stepping down from the truck, both pushed hard at one of the vehicle’s doors, causing it to swing into a police officer and knocking him to the ground. A second officer, standing with the chains and cuffs in hand was then struck by a brick in the face, allegedly wielded by one of the accused of murdering Dube.

The third officer pulled out a firearm and fired off two warning shots into the air before demanding that all prisoners lie on the ground.

Police then handcuffed and chained the prisoners.

Four police officers injured during the incident were treated at the scene.

The two accused were taken to hospital for treatment for injuries they sustained during the incident.

Dube’s family clapped in excitement when the three accused were later found guilty by the court after being brought back to hear the verdict passed.
